State-of-the-Art Emergency Department Planned
at San Pedro Peninsula Hospital (2/1/00)
SAN PEDRO, CA A major $3 million renovation and expansion of San Pedro Peninsula Hospitals (SPPH) emergency department and the construction of a separate $700,000 community education center will begin this year, hospital officials announced.
The expansion of the emergency department is necessary to meet the steadily growing patient demand and to provide a variety of rooms for all types of patients from someone suffering a major heart attack to a person who breaks his little finger in the middle of the night.
Not only will the renovation allow our medical staff to provide the best care for our emergency patients, it also will be in compliance with new state-mandated seismic conditions that must be met by 2008, said SPPH President John Wilson. The emergency department will truly be a state-of-the-art facility for the 21st century.
The emergency department expansion will replace the hospitals four current conference rooms. A separate $700,000 community education center will be built in place of the conference rooms.
Once the renovation is completed, the emergency department will increase from the current eight-bed department to a wing containing 15 beds within 14 separate patient rooms. These rooms will be specialized to treat patients with specific conditions.
The expanded emergency department will include:
Four resuscitation rooms for treatment of patients sustaining major emergencies such as injuries from an automobile or industrial accident.
Two cardiac rooms for patients suffering chest pains or other heart-related ailments.
Three general treatment rooms.
Four observation beds for patients who may require hospital admission.
A pediatric room that will include two cribs, a television, VCR, and toys and books.
An updated Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) Center for victims of sexual assault.
The emergency department will also feature a Fast Track system that allows patients who suffer minor emergencies on weekends and evenings -- when most urgent care centers and medical centers are not open to be seen and cared for quickly.
In addition, the emergency department will feature a more efficient and patient-friendly admissions area and triage center. A centralized physician and nurses station will allow the medical staff to closely monitor each patient. And a consultation room will allow physicians and family members to speak privately on the condition of a patient.
When completed, our emergency department will be a superior facility providing great care and service to the community, said Stephen R. Shea, Medical Director of the SPPH Emergency Department. |
