Children Score with SPPH Golf Classic

Posted: August 4, 2000

The historic Virginia Country Club in Long Beach will be the scene of the 21st annual San Pedro Peninsula Hospital Foundation Golf Classic on Monday, August 14th.

During the past 20 years, the amateur scramble tournament has raised more than $1 million for the hospitals programs and community outreach services. This year, the tournament is expected to raise more than $75,000 for the Partners for Healthy Kids program and its new 38-foot mobile pediatric van. The vans medical staff travels to schools in San Pedro, Gardena, Wilmington and Lawndale and provides health care at no cost for children of families who do not have the resources to seek regular medical care.

Were very excited to be keeping our Golf Classic at the Virginia Country Club, said event co-chair Hugh Hoffman. This is one of the finest golf courses in Southern California. Last year, the tournament was a sell-out, and we expect the same this year.

The shotgun tournament will begin with a noon tee time. Besides playing 18 holes of golf, each participant will receive a complimentary barbecue lunch, on-course refreshments and a chance at hole-in-one prizes. Players can also participate in putting, chipping and long-drive contests. A dinner and awards banquet -- which includes both silent and live auctions -- follows the tournament.

The tournament cost is $375 per player. To register call the Foundation office at (310) 514-5324.
