Nursing at Little Company of Mary
Our System
Little
Company of Mary is an integrated regional health care system based in Torrance,
California comprised of nearly 30 health care sites throughout the greater South
Bay, Harbor and Palos Verdes Peninsula communities. LCM was
created in 1992 through the
affiliation of Little Company of Mary Hospital - Torrance and
Little Company of Mary San Pedro Hospital.
Little Company of Mary is currently comprised of two acute-care hospitals,
Little Company of Mary Hospital - Torrance and Little
Company of Mary San Pedro Hospital, the Medical Institute of Little Company of Mary,
four skilled nursing facilities, three urgent care centers, a
number of outpatient facilities, home care, hospice and two fund-raising
foundations. LCM is part of a growing system of more than 42 health care
facilities governed by the Sisters of Little Company of Mary, a worldwide
nursing congregation of nearly 450 Catholic sisters.
In 1999, LCM and Providence Health System affiliated their two systems.
The new organization, called Providence Health System Southern California
Region, is structured into two service areas: Little Company of Mary (covering
the South Bay) and San Fernando Valley.
Our Service Area
More than 850,000 people live in the
Little Company of Mary service area, which includes: Torrance, Redondo Beach,
Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Palos Verdes, Lomita, El Segundo, Gardena,
Hawthorne, Lawndale, Harbor City, San Pedro, Wilmington and Carson. Little
Company of Marys Home Care and Chemical Dependency Recovery affiliates also
service the greater Los Angeles area.
Our Nurses
Our nurses work closely with physicians to provide the most
comprehensive and complete care for our patients. They have many opportunities
to plan, direct, provide and evaluate patient care. A computerized
documentation system facilitates patient charting, and CareMaps help our nurses
to ensure evidence-based best practice. The nurses also collaborate with
patient advocates to ensure the patients' well-being and coordination of care
with other disciplines. We use non-licensed assistance personnel to help
with order entry, EKG's and basic patient care. Our nurses provide the
cornerstone of care for every patient we treat. We celebrate the efforts
of our nurses through a nurse excellence program and during recognized Nurse
Week celebrations.
